Rental Policy of Hertz St. Thomas, USVI

Hertz Rent-A-Car offers the flexibility of driving itheir rental vehicles on both St. Thomas and St. John.

Terms & Conditions

Loss Damage Waiver (LDW):
Loss Damage Waiver is always recommended on the islands of St. Thomas & St John due to road conditions and driving on the left-hand side. You may opt for the LDW upon car pick up or you may choose to decline it as it is completely optional unless you are renting our vehicle with a debit card. We highly advise you to verify your own insurance policy before your arrival as not all policies will cover you in USVI Territory.  

If customer has decided to rely on their own personal insurance policy, then customer may opt for our Partial Damage Waiver (PDW) which will cover the customer’s deductible and up to the first $1000 in damage, including but not limited to other items not covered by most personal insurance policies:  Loss of Use, Administrative Fees, and Diminution of Value, Tires and Glass.

Please be advised that charges associated with the base rate include local taxes which are applicable at the time of booking could be subject to change.    

As with all car rental companies worldwide we have a two-hour no-show policy. This means that reservations are held for two hours from the reservation pick up time. Customers or travel agents should notify the rental counter of any delays in order to preserve the availability of the vehicle upon late arrival.  

All of our vehicles are non-smoking.  A $250.00 charge will apply if any cigarette or marijuana smoke is detected. Any excess sand and dirtiness may also lead to a cleaning fee of up to $250.

All reservations will be automatically enrolled in our Emergency Roadside Assistance (ERA) which provides the following services free of charge:  tire change service, battery jump services, out of gas rescue, and locked/lost/damaged/stolen keys will be replaced completely free.  Customers may request to be dis-enrolled at time of rental. Customers who choose to disenroll will receive all the ERA services upon need, but will be charged a minimum of $99 per service fee plus ferry / towing / key / gas costs etc..

Insurance
Due to the law stated in V.I. Code tit. 20, § 418 & 419 we require customers hiring rental vehicles in St. Thomas to provide their own verifiable liability insurance upon pick up and we may verify the viability of such insurance. For this reason we highly recommend for customers to verify their personal insurance policy and confirm that it is transferrable to US Virgin island Territory. If customer would like to use their credit card to cover the rental vehicle, please be aware that proof of liability will still be required as Credit Card Coverages expressly exclude Liability Insurance altogether. This said, please be aware that if proof is not available then the purchase of our Third Party Liability (TPL) will become a necessary condition of the rental at $14.99 per day.  

Customers who purchased an insurance policy via a third-party website (such as Expedia, Travelocity, Orbits etc.…) must also show proof of liability insurance because as with credit card coverage, they expressly exclude liability protection whatsoever. If customer cannot provide proof of Liability Insurance, then the purchase of our TPL will become a necessary condition of the rental at $14.99 per day.

Personal Effects Protection (PEP) is also available which will protect your personal belongings in case of theft from the vehicle.   This coverage replaces any of the renter’s and passenger’s stolen personal property from the vehicle.  It shall only apply to luggage, clothes, and toiletries up to $500 per person, with a $50 deductible, and a max payout of $1500 per incident.  Signs of forced entry must be evidently written in VI Police Report.  Items of high value are not covered.  

Credit Card Protection Services (CCPS) is perfect for customers who wish to rely on their credit card to cover the vehicle.  This will include Third Party Liability (TPL), which is not covered by credit cards, and relieve the customer of other financial responsibilities such as: Loss of Use, Administrative Fees ($250), and Diminution of Value which are not usually covered by credit cards.

Return refueling
All vehicles must be returned full or at the same level it was received at. as rented to avoid a per gallon surcharge.  Customers may prepay the tank of gas at the time of rental. No refunds for unused gas.

Driver's license
A physical valid driver’s license and a major credit/debit card in the same name must be presented by the renter at time of pick up.  We do not accept paper copies or digital copies of driver’s licenses. We shall accept renewals made online after expiration date on Driver’s License, but main driver must have the original expired Driver’s License present as well.  

Additional drivers are allowed to drive the rental vehicle only if they present a valid driver’s license at the time of pick up. An Additional Driver surcharge of $9.99 per day and $4.99 per day for spouses will apply.

Drivers between the ages of 21-24 can rent our vehicles and be subject to the $25 per day Underage surcharge.  

Forms of payment

Credit cards acceptable for rentals and deposits are AX, DS, VS, and MC.  Customer may rent with a debit or check card with a MC/VS logo on it and they must purchase the Total or Standard Protection as a minimum, as well as prepaid fuel option as necessary conditions of the rental. Deposits take anywhere from 30 to 60 business days to re-appear in bank account balances.  Car rental company is not liable for any non-sufficient funds charges from customer’s financial institution.  Prepaid cards, including chime, are not accepted.
